Why was Sir Thomas More famous? Accomplishments and Achievements?  A brilliant man of principles who was executed by beheading because he refused to bow to the will of the king above his religious beliefs and to accept King Henry VIII as the supreme head of the Church of England.

Sir Thomas More Timeline and Biography - Utopia
Sir Thomas More was also famous as the author of the book called Utopia and a great statesman in the royal court of King Henry VIII. Utopia was published in 1516 which describes a perfect imaginary island with a political system. The primary message of the book is the need for order and discipline, rather than liberty. The ideas expressed in Utopia places high value on the attainment of harmony and on a strict hierarchy of order. The word Utopia is now used to describe an ideal, if not impossible, social world - Utopian.

1478Thomas More was born on 7 February 1478 to a lawyer called John More and his wife Agnes Graunger. Early education: He attended St Anthony's School in Threadneedle Street in London.
 

1491During this period he was sent to live with of John Morton, Lord Chancellor to King Henry VII and the Archbishop of Canterbury
   

1492Thomas More continued his studies at Oxford University and studies law
 

1496More is admitted to Lincoln's Inn to further his legal studies and during this time meets Erasmus
 

1499Thomas More starts work as a barrister after completion of his law studies

1504He becomes a member of parliament.
 

1505Thomas More seriously considered entering the priesthood but decided against it and
married Jane Colt, saying he would rather become a good husband than a bad priest.
 

15101510 Appointed under-sheriff of London and gained a reputation as a scrupulously honest man
 

1511
 
His wife Jane dies leaving him with four children. He marries Alice Middleton, a widow seven years his senior, a month later to ensure that his children have a mother. Alice also has a daughter called Alice who Thomas adopts
 

1515He is sent on a diplomatic mission to Antwerp where he begins to write Utopia
 

1516His book, Utopia, is published which describes an ideal, if not impossible, social world
 

1517Thomas More enters the service of King Henry VIII as counsellor and "personal servant".
 

1518He becomes a member of the Privy Council of King Henry VIII.

At this time Sir Thomas started work on a History of King Richard III, a work which was strongly biased towards the Tudors and used by William Shakespeare asa basis for his play
 


1521Thomas More was knighted and made under treasurer after undertaking a diplomatic mission to the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V.
 

1523Sir Thomas More becomes the Speaker of the House of Commons
 

1525He is appointed Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster with judicial control of much of northern England.

1526King Henry VIII becomes totally obsessed Anne Boleyn with whom he falls madly in love

1530Sir Thomas refuses to sign a letter by the leading English churchmen and courtiers asking the Pope to annul the marriage of King Henry VIII to Katherine of Aragon
 

1531Sir Thomas is forced to take an oath declaring the king the supreme head of the English church "as far the law of Christ allows." He attempts to resign his office but the King refuses him permission
 

1532He is unable to support Henry's attempts to divorce Katherine and marry Anne Boleyn. Sir Thomas again asks King Henry VIII permission to resign his office  claiming that he was ill and suffering from sharp chest pains. This time Henry grants his request.
 

153325 January 1533 Henry marries Anne Boleyn and is excommunicated by Pope Clement VII
 

1534March 23, 1534, Pope Clement VII declared that the marriage of Henry and Katherine of Aragon had indeed been valid.

March 30, Parliament passed the Act of Succession which granted legitimate succession to the throne to the children of Henry and Anne Boleyn and negated the same to any children of Henry and Katherine of Aragon. Opposition to the Act constituted high treason.

King Henry VIII breaks with the Church in Rome and Parliament passes the Act of Supremacy on 3 November 1534, confirming King Henry VIII as Supreme head of the Church of England.
 


1534April: Sir Thomas More sent to the Tower for refusing to take the oath of the Act of Succession
 

15351 July: Sir Thomas More tried and convicted for treason and on 6 July he is beheaded on Tower Hill.
